The alternate takes of Giant Steps and Naima are part of a recording session different from the ones in which the main takes were recorded, with different sidemen. All the other alternates from the same sessions which gave first released takes. The album "John Coltrane: Giant Steps" (Atlantic SD 1311) was first released in 1960. The alternates were first released as part of "John Coltrane: Alternate Takes" in 1974 (Atlantic SD 1668), reissued in the Atlantic Jazzlore series as "John Coltrane: Countdown" (Atlantic 90462)

All the selections are published by Jowcol Music, BMI
The alternate takes of Giant Steps and Naima (Tracks 8 and 9) were recorded on April 1st, 1959.
The main takes of Giant Steps, Cousin Mary, Countdown, Spiral, Syeeda's Song Flute (Tracks 1 through 5) and Mr. P.C. (Track 7) were recorded on May 4, 1959.
The alternate takes of Cousin Mary, Countdown and Syeeda's Song Flute (Tracks 10, 11 and 12) were recorded on the same date.
The main take of Naima (Track 6) was recorded on December 2, 1959.
All the selections were recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, NY.
